You can't go wrong with John Warry's "Warfare in the Classical World".

Great general introduction to the period, plenty of pictures.

If it’s novels you are interested then I would second the suggestion of “Imperial Governor” by George Shipway and add that other classic “Eagle of the Ninth” by Rosemary Sutcliffe.

Of course if you want both historical accuracy and inspiration for “Infamy, Infamy!” scenarios then you could not go wrong by following the adventures a certain Gallic warrior called “Asterix the Gaul”. Unless you are planning on playing Romans. 😉😊
