Re: Off board mortars question

Yes, there are even variations (e.g. 'Lazy W') that stagger and overlap the ovals of individual mortars, so as to create a (roughly) square or rectangular area, across or in-line with the line of fire. The shape and form a barrage took depended on the skill and experience of the guy calculating the ...

Re: British Para Company - HQ Section

A division or brigade HQ really shouldn't be in action obviously, but a company HQ is a different matter and more so an airborne one, which is what we are talking about here after all. The company CP should be protected and out of the line of fire, but the Commander's OP needs to be up front, which ...

Re: Off board mortars question

What it does do is provide an enjoyable and manageable game mechanic. We'd have to agree to disagree on that. It's the one feature of the game I'd do away with. I would however use the bits for spotting rounds variation etc. for single off-table light mortars, be they integral to the platoon, or at...

Re: British Para Company - HQ Section

I agree, but the same could also be said of recce units in the main though. Nevertheless having the HQ complement in the thick of it was not unheard of; two of four I Airborne VCs at Arnhem were awarded to company commanders, another to a platoon leader who became the de facto leader of an ad hoc co...

Re: Off board mortars question

Yes, if you're going for ease of delineating, but want to have the area resemble the real thing too, Chris's idea is the way to go.

Re: British Para Company - HQ Section

Yes, no non-coms on a drop and even a battalion HQ might find itself on the frontline through the vagaries of happenstance. If I remember correctly the HQ was broken down into two groups, each headed by one of the officers, supported by one of the senior NCOs and accompanied by the respective batman...

Re: Possible Barrage House Rules

Nor were they very effective against dug in troops. Depends what you call effective. There's morale effect... Ambling through a meadow and then being on the receiving end of '6 rounds rapid' per tube, that arrive without warning, is over in about twenty seconds. Then if you were quick enough to hit...

Re: Possible Barrage House Rules

An in-game effect for anything bigger than a 60mm mortar attached to the platoon, whether on-table or off, is a moot point to me. Other than troops in bunkers and solid buildings, a typical medium mortar barrage would nuke a 6'x4' table. Certainly dug-in (foxholes & slit trenches) troops would be su...

Re: Possible Barrage House Rules

For me the sniper rules are fine, a 50/50 chance of hitting your target pretty much reflects the bulk of 'sniper fire' happening at 200 yards and under. You don't even need a scope at that distance, unless all you can see is a head. Our guys are indeed unit sharpshooters/marksmen at best though, rat...

Re: Possible Barrage House Rules

Regimental CPs are not usually noted for their proximity to the frontline either, but that is where you would expect to find a FOO and his guys, with maybe the 75s or 105s of the regimental cannon company a short distance away. Should we add those to the game? Forward Observers, FOOs, or whatever, d...
