Re: 1939-era Polish cavalry

Contrarius - point well taken. However, fact is there is no English equivalent other than the literal 'horse leader'. I'm afraid, 'horse-holder' doesn't really cut the mustard for me because that implies a static role - ie with the holder dismounted or at best, say in the German manner, slowly steer...

Re: 1939-era Polish cavalry

The idea of treating the squadron as a platoon is an excellent one in my opinion. It would bring it more in line with other units and allows you to do what was frequently done in practice. Dismounted you have: • HQ of CO (rotmistrz = captain) and bugler (NCO) + a BAR section of 3 men (as in the line...

Re: 1939-era Polish cavalry

Thanks for that, Nick. I always worry about offending people when writing this sort of thing. Glad to be of help and encouraged by what you said, I'll press on with the mounted chaps. Oh noooo, they groaned….. Errhile gives an accurate description of the Polish cavalry platoon. I would only add a fe...

Re: What figures do\would you use?

Though shouldn't the norm be 4 men in a SAW team in the early stages of the war (and not so early for many nations)? That was the usual configuration in most armies of the period eg German, Soviet, Polish, Hungarian, Romanian, Italian. The French had 5 and the Danes 9 - but then again the entire Dan...

Re: What figures do\would you use?

In practice I suspect the other SMG went to the squad 2ic, who would normally be with the rifle group, not the gun. Fair point apart from that the 1943 NA TOEs did not include formally a squad second in command nor does there appear to be a formal division of the squad into LMG and rifle teams as t...

Re: What figures do\would you use?

Personally I try to stick to historical and/or TOE allocations of weapons (they are not necessarily the same!). In principle the job of the 'others' was to keep the LMG going (schlepping ammo into combat and, in combat, traipsing back and forth between the gun and the platoon transport fetching more...

Re: 1939-era Polish cavalry

My first post here, so please be gentle :) In terms of organic AT firepower, I'd say a Polish platoon isn't any worse than a German platoon (with their Panzerbuche) In fact I would say better off because its anti-tank rifles were real whereas those of the German counterpart mainly on paper. Re: Motocycle combo question

Hi Came across this accidentally. I think KStN 1111a was not (at least initially) meant to replace KStN 1111 (hence the 'a'). 1111 was the motorcycle infantry version while 1111a was for motorcycle cavalry. At any rate both existed side by side in 1939 (in Panzer and Light divisions respectively for...
