I can see why the shape would be confusing, because the item is so rarely seen from above and hence that shape/profile is unusual, but from the position, it can only be the cartouche/cartridge box (also known as a "giberne"); it would be black leather.

I've seen a lot of folk making up elaborate Romanesque buildings (walled farms, villas, temples etc), but what exactly is the status of a building in I/I as opposed to a fortification/defensive work? Are they principally decorative, or are they supposed to be more functional, or does the player have...

Nice find TT. Looks like the Japanese were also happy to cram more men into one than the British were.
