The Japanese used flamethrowers when attacking in close terrain in New Guinea. I know of at least one instance where they tried to use two during the battle at Milne Bay. It’s designed as a short range weapon to dislodge defenders from difficult positions so I’m not sure woods should be a problem. I...

Australia made two local pattern carriers (LP1 and LP2, with a 2A variant).
Here’s an LP1 in Syria and note the steeper angle of the glacis plate.

If you set a time limit, then make it a number of turns (not phases). This makes it unpredictable for the attacker and an incentive to be more aggressive.
