I think it also depends on whether you are wanting to do historical scenarios or something fictional. If the latter, and it’s a relatively even scenario I generally factor on an average Line rating across the board, with a few Veteran and recruit to balance things out. If it’s an historical scenario...

The -2 penalty is just for artillery firing at skirmishers where they are the only target. If you have skirmish screen greater than 5cm in front of the formed units, for artillery, the first casualty is taken on the screen, the rest on the formed unit. DJ, the rules say no. Skirmishers lose a CD when firing at other skirmishers, but not artillery. I guess the logic is that artillery gunners present as a clumped target when serving a gun unlike skirmishers who can take advantage of cover even when firing.

Thats what 6mm can allow you to do - real focus on terrain and avoids the Napoleonic pike block look - well done
