That's it pretty much. If it looks like your target is going to rack up a lot of dice, don't get into close combat, simple as.
The 'art' of the game is to soften up your enemy, as a few here have said, then close assault to destroy him, or force a withdrawal.

Re: Random thought/s on close combat
Rare? It is the be all and end all of infantry action. Perhaps it was a mistake to call it Close Combat and maybe Assault would have been better. 4" is 36' and nobody is using bayonets and entrenching tools until they are 1" from their enemy. It is however just within the maximum distance ...

Re: 1940 Handbook questions / erratas
As production of anything starts slow and then ramps up as folk get used to doing it, how many would be with units in May if production only began in March? Blokes then have to learn the weapon inside out, just so they can train other blokes how to use it and teach others. It's certainly not a case ...

Re: Chain of Command Update
No certainly not, but I think enough has already been added over the last few years to warrant a tidy up in a new edition. Certainly those who prefer the current rulebook, complete with numerous scraps of paper and stuff written on beer mats and fag packets, could continue to do alongside dapper cha...

Re: Chain of Command Update
I would be in favour of a CoC2. :P Perhaps taking a leaf out of Studio Tomahawk's book and just having the central/common rules in it. Rules + appropriate handbook should be all you need to game your chosen theatre. There should be no recourse to checking errata/FAQ, other handbooks, forum, Facebook...

Oh yes, none of the values should be taken in isolation and it is by juggling them around that we can present quite a variety of outcomes. Certainly if you wanted to represent a unit with a core of jaded veterans and more numerous raw replacements, you don't have to just take an average and downgrad...

With five pages of discussion in this thread alone and the previous thread on top, clearly 'obvious' it was not.john de terre neuve wrote: ↑Fri Dec 21, 2018 4:31 pm What Rich has confirmed was absolutely obvious from the RAW!

It represents the command and control structure; how the platoon leader interacts with his NCOs, how they lead their men etc. Five command dice is the average. Four is lacking in some aspect and five with a red or phase dice represents an enhanced structure; perhaps some men are capable of acting on...

It represents leadership difference not troop difference.
