Re: Excessive reload times for artillery in SP2?

I'm sure B.P. Hughes must have written something about this in his seminal study, Firepower (1974). Unfortunately, I'm away from home for the next week or so, and can't check my copy. I do, however, have a note that Napoleon used to issue his Guard artillery 8pdrs with 3 caissons per gun, and the 12...

Re: Excessive reload times for artillery in SP2?

I couldn't believe the figure of 700 rounds per gun myself until reading Mercer's earlier bit about 50 rounds per gun being expended in a matter of minutes. Indeed, I think he's very clear on this point: 19 June 1815 “A return had been called for yesterday evening just as we were lying down to rest,...

Re: Excessive reload times for artillery in SP2?

While we’re here, Mercer seems to answer another question I had about SP2. Could a gun move while loaded? Shortly moving off to join battle he states: “[we] lighted our slow matches, put shot in our leathern cartouches, loaded the guns with powder, and stuck priming wires into the vents to prevent t...

Excessive reload times for artillery in SP2?

Was just reading the memoirs of the Waterloo campaign by Mercer, who served as captain in the RHA commanding a troop of 9pdr guns in the battle. He mentions two interesting statistics that really put the cat among the pigeons as far as gun vs musket firing rates are concerned. First, he states that ...

Re: Rethinking Multi-figure bases

I started with large bases for my guns and HMGs using old credit cards, with permanently fixed gun and crew, plus separate Junior Leader figure on a coin-type base. Wasn’t too happy with this system however. Firstly the bases were too wide, and don’t fit in the emplacements I bought for them, and se...

Re: SP2 in 1/72

Very nice! And proof, if proof were needed, that you can field an entire Sharp Practice force from under a tenner (£10 for the uninitiated). I’m also a fan of 1/72 and find it’s a perfect all-round scale for gaming, which works well for big battalion games such as General d’Armee and large Skirmish ...

Re: SP Ancients?

I think Rich said he was excited about the idea of SP ancients and hoped to work on it shortly. I’d be surprised if the Lardies had anything ready yet.

Re: Four Command Dice Platoon? Coculator cost?

An extra red dice is costed at 2 points in the Blitzkrieg handbook, and that’s not a full value standard dice which contributes to turn ends and the like. That’s for a nominal 20 percent improvement. The reduction from 5 to 4 is an immediate drop of 25% and that is full value standard dice. I suspec...

Re: WORLD WAR 2 ANTI-TANK RIFLES

Most ATRs have magazines holding 4-5 rounds; the Pz II’s had 10 rounds and lots more nearby. In reality though, three or four penetrating hits will pretty much do the business.

We’ve got to ask why ATRs were never very popular. I suspect portability was a big part of the problem.

Re: APC and close combat question

While I agree with Archduke re tactics it is also worth noting sec 7.6 Overunning jump off points. It uses the term troops not troops or vehicles. I would say the passengers need to dismount to capture it giving the defenders a chane to drive them off it. I think it would help to define what exactl...
