Unlike Probe, you'd want to get a certain amount of the ambushed troops off table, probably more than one unit.

To be precise, you can take the 'free' activation you have paid for before or after their normal activation.

Also they get a limited number of shots (3?), used to be less effective on the first shot at a target, and have quite a long minimum range. They can be quite effective, but at other times they can be a damp squib.

Forming a new team does not activate the original team. I see what you're getting at, but as it stands, creating a new team does not activate the remainder. It really doesn't happen often enough to be an issue.

There is still a clear path, even if a die needs to be expended. If the defenders were facing I'd say there was no doubt that close combat would be initiated at 4" distance. As an umpire I might allow not initiating combat if the enemy are facing away, but that's not how I interpret the rule, and I ...

I certainly would insist on close combat if the defenders were facing your way or if you'd been firing and moving - you've stumbled into contact and the defender knows you are there. As they aren't looking, and the only time you are likely not to initiate this attack is when you know you've got the ...
