Re: Cavalry charging infantry, too hard???

Good comments all. Having absorbed all the above posts, I think playing the odds, I would not perform emergency formation changes, even if in line (more likely to end up unformed if you attempt to form square VS pass the DT to stay in line and fire). If I was to house rule my "concerns", I'd conside...

Re: Cavalry charging infantry, too hard???

If you plan on staying in line, I would rather the cavalry start within 15cm, so I'm not forced to take a discipline test. I find that "not as it should be". I think that cavalry that manage to launch a charge within 15cm should be benefited (as I wouldn't bother doing an emergency formation change,...

Re: Cavalry charging infantry, too hard???

So if you are in a situation where the cavalry is unlikely to close with you, you are better to hold (either in line or column, but you must test to hold in line by my reading on page 44) and give the cavalry a blast rather than risking becoming unformed in a risky attempt to form a last minute squ...

Re: Cavalry charging infantry, too hard???

Yep, misread that, rules say "if you retreat". Line grade troops have a 17% chance of retreating as a result of the DT. Also missed the unformed bit, which is important. That means that infantry are always unformed when facing cav if in line or column, which makes going into square more palatable, b...

Re: Cavalry charging infantry, too hard???

It seems I've miscalculated the odds of being dispersed if you do attempt to change to square when charged. Under CONDUCTING THE CHARGE (P44) it says that if a unit fails to change into square, it retreats. Under the definition of Retreats (P44 point d) it says a retreating unit contacted by a charg...

Re: Cavalry charging infantry, too hard???

The cav have to win by 2 in the melee to force the infantry to disperse, so the chances of that are 27%. Extrapolate the chances of a cav regiment dispersing an infantry unit and that comes out at, what 6%?? That's not taking into account defensive fire which could make that even worse. Your chances...

Re: Cavalry charging infantry, too hard???

DB, A wargame is a game. Like all games, it has rules. Those rules shape the way we play the game. It is very hard to say to yourself, "My infantry are being charged, my overall chances are better if I stay in column, but Lord/Count "XYZ" would have gone into square, so I shall do the same. That is ...

Re: Cavalry charging infantry, too hard???

I just read the other post on this. I can see the rationale for giving a column the same benefit as a square, but who is going to bother going to square if already in a column? Yes I know that square is better in melee, but you would need to be unlucky for the charge to go in, so why bother? To be h...

Re: Melee with Elan?

The example suggested (to me at least) that just because you had a column you obtained "Melee with Elan".

Cavalry charging infantry, too hard???

Does anybody think that it is too difficult to charge infantry in column? Column infantry vs cav +2, if the infantry are better quality, then they get further pluses. I charged a vet inf battalion in line with a recruit cav regiment and found out that you don't have much chance of closing with infan...
