Chain of Command Abyssinia: Italian Colonial Troops
The Italian Royal Corps of Colonial Troops, the Regio Corpo Truppe Coloniali, were principally comprised of Eritrean Ascaris in the north and Arabo-Somali Ascaris in the south. The RCTC included infantry, machine gun, cavalry and artillery units. Their cavalry, the ‘Penne di Falco’ were the major regular mounted arm the Italians had in the Abyssinian War. These troops are covered in their own army list to follow.
The battalions were unique in that they combined Arabs and Somalis into a unit together. The Italians believed the Arab to be a better fighter as well as having a stabilising effect on the Somalis.
