Welcome to this, the first edition of our regular news updates from Lard Island designed to keep the gaming community up to date with our ever expanding range of products.  As many of you will know the TooFatLardies yahoo Group is a great place to hear about developments, however we know that some people would rather cast a casual eye over what we’re up to rather than have daily involvement with a busy forum, so this newsletter is for them.

Without doubt our biggest release of the year has been Sharp Practice, large scale Napoleonic skirmish rules that are designed to fill a gap between the traditional skirmish game with a dozen or so figures and the larger battle sets that are out there.  Our reasoning in developing these was pretty simple; any reader of Napoleonic or 19th Century fiction, from Hornblower to Jack Aubrey, Flashman to Sharpe, Matthew Hervey to Brigadier Gerard, will know that their adventures can present eminently gameable scenarios.  The problem we found was that the actions they were involved in tended to feature between 30 and 100 men a side (and believe me we checked them all out!) which fell in the gap between any rule sets we knew.  So Sharp Practice was born.

We have been tremendously pleased with the response since our first launch game at Essex Eagle in May when we completely sold out of our first print run and the last of the limited edition figures that we produced for this set, and sales ever since have been excellent, buoyed up, no doubt by comments from hobby illuminati such as Mike Siggins, “I like these rules a lot, and Rich Jones, “So does it deliver what it promises – I’d have to say a resounding, “Yes”’.  No wonder we’re on our third print run already!

What’s more this month saw the release of “The Compleat Fondler”, a 107 page PDF supplement with eighteen scenarios tracing the career of Richard Fondler from a private soldier in India through his time with the 95th Rifles and the West Sussex Regiment to his role as a Lieutenant Colonel at Waterloo.  This supplement draws heavily on the literary tradition of Napoleonic soldiers and is full of rip-roaring scenarios

B'Maso

For Modern African Wars

Summer of 2008 saw us take a trip to Sub-Saharan Africa with the launch of B’Maso!  This work has enjoyed a long gestation period as we tried to capture all of those aspects that made warfare in Africa in the post-colonial period so different and the end result has been roundly welcomed by wargamers of these diverse conflicts.

B’Maso takes a measured look at counter-insurgency warfare in Africa generally, examining the methods and objectives of irregular warfare and the specifics of their implementation in Africa.  Additionally a number of wars are looked at in several chapters including Kenya, the Congo, Biafra/Nigeria, Angola, Mozambique, Guinea Bissau, Rhodesia and South West Africa.  B’Maso covers each conflict separately, with an historical overview, colour maps, a look at the participants, their organisation and armament, conflict specific rules and how to use these forces with either I Ain’t Been Shot Mum or Troops, Weapons & Tactics, making this our first official joint supplement.

Additionally there are nine scenarios, at least one for each conflict, to show how we have represented these conflicts on the tabletop.  As one reviewer said “Even if you aren’t using TooFatLardies rules this supplement is a “must have” due to the sheer volume of knowledge that the author has on warfare in Africa.  It’s 134 pages of printer-friendly pdf for just £7.00 by email.

International Lard Day

November the 30th will see us holding our International Lard D-Day Games.  In St Albans we will be refighting the whole of the Orne bridgehead with British and Canadian Paras using I Ain’t Been Shot Mum whilst around the globe gamers will be joining us fighting actions with US and British Paras, so we’ll be covering all of the airborne operations in Normandy for D-Day.    We still have one or two spaces left in St Albans, and plenty of room for gamers who want to play at their local club, store or in their own homes.  We provide the scenarios, you tell us the results and we can see just how successful the Longest Day is.

And Finally...

What’s coming next?  Well we are currently putting the finish touches to two supplements for I Ain’t Been Shot Mum, one for the 82nd “All American” Airborne in Normandy in June of 1944, and the other “Missing the Bus” for Norway in 1940.  Both of these should be with us in early October, being packed with factual information and re-fights of real battles.

Additionally we are working hard on completing our American Civil War battle rules, “They Couldn’t Hit An Elephant…” and “In the Buff” our forthcoming English Civil War rules are being tested to the limit in our regular Lard Island development sessions.  Our web site will be featuring regular updates, so don’t forget to put us in your favourites!
